The highly decorated BHS Debate Team under the direction of longtime Coach Joseph Pelletier earned the 2016 Debate State Championship held January 23 at Lewiston High School. The state competition is sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association in partnership with the Maine Forensics Association.
BHS students advanced in four of the five final rounds of the two-part competition composed of Lincoln Douglas (In the United States, private ownership of handguns ought to be banned) and Public Forum (On balance, economic sanctions are reducing the threat Russia poses to Western interests). Seven debaters earned four our more points toward the winning margin and BHS was re in the final round of competition in all but one judged area.
BHS Congressional Debate placed second as a team, highlighted by a repeat individual State Champion in senior Nick Danby. Senior Cavan Hagerty took second place individual honors for Maine. Danby made headlines last summer as the 2015 National Champion in Congressional Debate at an event in Dallas, Texas.
Pelletier’s 25-year tenure at BHS has seen over a dozen team an individual champions and two consecutive 5-year commendations for the BHS Chapter of the National Forensics Association.
