BHS Guidance oversees the pathway toward college and career readiness for individual students with the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) as the leading document. Each student meets with the Guidance Counselor regularly to develop this individual academic / career plan, emphasizing post-secondary education and career options in the exciting and ever-changing global job market.
During the 9th grade year, students engage in a scheduled Guidance course “Insights” that explores all domains of college and career readiness as defined in Maine’s Career and Education standards. In the sophomore year, “Careers” is a sequence of non-course seminar experiences extend the exploration of the standards and provide opportunity for students to demonstrate diploma proficiency.
Through these group and individual interactions, Guidance Counselors assist students in many ways:
- Planning the high school program—choosing courses and achieving one’s potential
- Assisting in decisions about life after high school—college and career planning
- Explaining and interpreting test scores (PSAT, SAT, ACT)
- Exploring student skills, talents, and interests
- Working through personal issues or problems
- Assisting and serving as a resource in emergency situations
