BHS Tutor Center
What is it?
The Bangor High School Tutor Center is run by a group of student who are dedicated to providing peer tutoring support for fellow students in need of academic help. Tutors work one-on-one, in small groups, in a classroom, or in a guided study hall with students.
How can a student sign up for tutoring?
Any student who could benefit from extra help can be referred to the tutor center by themselves, teachers, counselors, administrators, or parents with a simple email to any guidance counselor.
How can a student volunteer to be a tutor?
Any student in Grades 10-12 can become a BHS tutor. The process starts with an email to a guidance counselor. Tutor candidates must participate in a 90-minute training session to be qualified to tutor BHS students.
When does the tutoring session take place?
Tutoring sessions are scheduled based on the availability of the tutors. Most sessions will take place during study halls, but before and after school tutoring may be available as well. Some tutors will work directly with teachers and study hall monitors to help groups of students in the classroom.
How will tutors know how to help?
Two things help the tutors to be able to help students on specific lessons. First, all tutors are trained to make the best use of tutoring time. Second, the tutoring center communicates direct with teachers so they know what lessons are being taught each week. Students can also bring their assignments to the tutoring sessions if they are aware of their specific tutoring needs.
What subjects are supported by the tutoring center?
- GeoCivics, US History
- Freshman English, Sophomore English, Junior English
- Pre-Algrebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II
- French I, French II, Spanish I, Spanish II

Does volunteering to be a tutor qualify for community service hours?
Yes. One of the responsibilities of the tutoring center is to log the hours of service provided by our volunteers. At the end of the school year, each volunteer will receive a certificate with the number of hours given to the program.
