Purpose: To make up two days of senior school attendance over two separate afternoons of coordinated community service in cooperation with the Bangor Parks & Recreation Department.
NOTE: Senior participation in these days is required and we will bus students to and from the service sites on both days.
Day 1 of 2: Thursday, May 24 2:00-5:00PM
Each year for Memorial Day, the City of Bangor places flags on the headstones of veterans in four city-maintained cemeteries. Students will be bussed to those four locations (Pine Grove Cemetery, Maple Grove Cemetery, Oak Grove Cemetery, and Mt. Hope Cemetery) to assist City of Bangor crews to place the flags and honor veterans. Teacher chaperones will travel to and from the sites with the students, take the lead of the City of Bangor crews, assist in the placing of flags and oversight of students, and return on the busses with students.
Day 2 of 2: Thursday, May 31 2:00-5:00PM
Four City of Bangor recreation spaces undergo grooming and preparation prior to summer use and can benefit from students serving each location in various ways under the supervision and direction of City of Bangor crews:
- The Skate Park: Organization and light maintenance of the park, including use of hand tools, painting equipment, and other tasks that get the park up and ready!
- Union Street Complex: General maintenance, painting, grounds work and organization / cleaning in preparation for full summer use.
- Hayford Park: Pathway and trail reclamation along with general cleaning, organization and light maintenance.
- Bangor Waterfront: Hillside maintenance and Rain Garden reclamation along with general light maintenance.
Teacher chaperones will travel to and from the sites with the students, take the lead of the City of Bangor crews, assist with and oversee the students in the tasks, and return on the busses with students.
