Bangor High School Advisory Period

What is Advisory?

The Advisory Program at Bangor High School is designed to facilitate student engagement through exposure to Career & Life Development and Social-Emotional Learning opportunities.  Students will have 15-18 activities during each ranking period that will help them develop career and life plans for after high school.  In addition, the activities will help students with a wide range of topics such as; self-regulation, social awareness, building strong relationships, creative thinking and responsible decision making.  All of these skills are not only essential for human development, but they are also useful in the daily routine here at Bangor High School.  By helping students to examine the world around them, and their role in it, students will be better prepared to benefit from, and make contributions to their society.

Advisory Curriculum

Standards

Standards are sets of knowledge and/or skills that describe desired outcomes or learning within a curriculum. Standards help focus instruction on what is essential for students and what can be measured through a goal-directed assessment. The following four sources are where Bangor High School's Advisory curriculum originates (to learn more, click on the links):

Maine Learning Standards

Bangor School Department: Strategic Plan: Pathways to Excellence

American School Counselor Association: Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success

CASEL Framework for Social-Emotional Learning

Grade-Specific Curriculum Outlines:

Grade 9 - Transitions

In Grade 9, the Advisory curriculum focuses on transitioning to high school, establishing a baseline understanding of post-secondary planning, and preparation for increased independence and individual decision-making. (See Grade 9 Advisory Topics Here)

Grade 10 - Insights

In Grade 10, the Advisory curriculum addresses the foundational elements of a post-secondary plan; including career choices, academic requirements for future plans and the soft skills needed for each student to be able to execute their plan.

Grade 11 - Decisions

In Grade 11, the Advisory curriculum evolves into a decision-making support system in which students identify and operationalize the task completion that is necessary for their post-secondary plan. Essentially moving from "What can I do?" to "How do I do it?"

Grade 12 - Destinations

Finally, in Grade 12, the Advisory curriculum is all about navigating the chosen path ahead. The applications are done, so students will be learn about "Adulting" and tackle topics ranging from personal finance to time management that will be helpful when they are "on their own."
