BHS School Counseling Department Mission

The mission of the Bangor High School Counseling Department is to provide a proactive, comprehensive, and developmentally appropriate program to address students' academic and career goals in addition to supporting their personal growth and social needs. Counselors serve as academic and postsecondary advisors by facilitating active involvement in determining future career and life pursuits.  The primary responsibility of counselors is to help ensure that students have the resources, encouragement, and direct assistance in making a successful path through Bangor High School and on to postsecondary college, career and life success.

All students are advised to engage in a challenging program of study that keeps them engaged, excited and motivated.  They are also encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities in order to develop individual strengths, interests, and talents. The explicit goal across Bangor schools is for students to engage in two or more co- or extra-curricular activities over the course of the school year, one in each semester.

Counselors adhere to a comprehensive plan for advising each student that begins with a student’s transition from middle school to Bangor High School.  Each student meets with the counselor on a regular basis and develops an individualized career and life plan, which emphasizes lifelong learning and continued skill-building that contributes to a happy and successful life and career.

In these ways, BHS counselors are primarily responsible for assisting students in the attainment of all local, state, national and professional standards regarding postsecondary educational and life skills.  These standards include:

  • Maine Learning Standards:  Life and Career Ready Standards.

  • The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies

  • ASCA’s Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success

  • Consortium for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL): CASEL 5 SEL Framework

  • Bangor School Department’s 10-year Strategic Plan: Pathways to Excellence
